I started in my basement in late 2018.
In November 2019 I opened my studio and was cruising right along.
Enter COVID, and after 4 and half short months, everything looked bleak.
Here are the top 5 lessons I learned running my business the last 2 years, that can also apply in your life.
1)Nothing prepares you like experience. – No matter how many books you read, seminars you attend, coaches you hire, NOTHING, can prepare you like actually experience. No one had experienced anything like COVID before. You can read 100 books on how to ride a bike, but until you get on the bike and try, you’ll never be able to ride.
2.)You must adapt or die – The hardest thing to do is change. Darwin said it best though, “ It is not the strongest of the species that survives, but the one most willing to adapt.”
3.) There’s such thing as making it – We have goals and things we want to attain in life. Once we hit those markers we feel that we can coast. “I made it to retirement.” Or “I lost the 30lbs.” I used to feel like that after going a month or so without drugs. But the reality is when we stop growing we start dying. Soon as you get comfortable in business or life, there is something or someone wanting it more, coming to take it from you.
4.)The world doesn’t care how much you want it – I always wanted to own my own business. I wanted it bad, and I finally had it. But the universe gave no fucks and just like that COVID nearly took it all away. Just because you want something doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. You gotta work for that shit.
5.)No one’s coming to save you- this one I heard listing to a motivational video. There was no PPP for me. No one was coming to say “it’ll be ok Matt” or here, let me get you through this. I had family to support me and I’m extremely grateful for. In the end, the only person that’s going to save you, is YOU!
These apply as much in business as they do in career, relationships, health and fitness.
